Remove the Conficker Virus?
You might ask, “How do I remove the conficker virus, or the conficker worm?” The video below shows you how to remove the conficker virus or the conficker worm.
- Just download the Conficker Removal Tool (.zip file – 2.2MB), double click on it, choose “Extract all files…” from the File menu, and follow the wizard’s instructions. You can use any other archiver, like WinZip. This will create a folder called bd_rem_tool.
- Inside it, find the program called “bd_rem_tool_gui.exe” (or just “bd_rem_tool_gui”) and double click on it. It is very important to extract all the files from the zip archive, and not only bd_rem_tool_gui.exe, because all the other files are needed for the disinfection. Then follow the tool’s instructions.
- If you have Windows Vista with User Acccess Control enabled, or if you are running as a restricted user in Windows XP, right click the “bd_rem_tool_gui” program and choose “Run as Administrator”. You will be prompted to enter credentials for an admin account.
- We recommend a system reboot after the disinfection is complete, to restore full internet access.
What if I can’t remove Conficker Virus using the above tool?
If the above tool doesn’t work, or you’re not able to download it, there are still several other options, but because the conficker worm also spreads through portable storage devices such as USB drives, disabling your PC’s autorun feature for external media is recommended. Here is how to remove conficker with a conficker remover, like Symantec’s downadup / conficker remover. This link will allow you to download the Symantec W32.Downadup Removal Tool. You can also use the F-SECURE Malware Removal Tool and Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal tool.
